Patients with gastrinomas suffer from heart burn, chronic diarrhea, gastric or duodenal ulcers. (so-called Zollinger-Ellison syndrome). These symptoms result from an extremely hyper-acidic stomach. Proton-pump inhibitors are very effective drugs for the long-term medical treatment of Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. The medical therapy usually leads to a complete disappearance of the symptoms. Long-term treatment by proton-pump inhibitors (omeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole, rabeprazole, esomeprazole) is well-tolerated.
